Statement: Rep. Schiff on Importance of Protecting Voting Rights on National Voter Registration Day

Washington, D.C. — Today, Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) released the following statement to mark National Voter Registration Day and the reintroduction of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would protect the right to vote by restoring and modernizing the protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

“On National Voter Registration Day, we must redouble our commitment to ensure that voters – regardless of their income, skin color, religion, disability, or sexual orientation — are able to exercise their right to make their voices heard. Passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which we reintroduced today, is a critical step towards protecting and strengthening our democracy,” said Rep. Schiff.  “John Lewis fought tirelessly for equality and justice — and he encouraged us to get into good trouble as we fight for a more just future. We must continue to honor his legacy, and protect the fundamental right to vote.”

Schiff cosponsored and helped pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the House last Congress. He has led major legislative efforts to protect democracy, including his landmark bill the Protecting Our Democracy Act to strengthen the guardrails of our democracy against presidents or other officials who seek to abuse their power for personal gain, and the Judiciary Act to expand and unpack the Supreme Court.
